Sports are an important means for human beings to strengthen their physique, improve their health, cultivate their personality and promote interpersonal communication. In order to understand the scientific laws of physical exercise, some scholars have started to study human kinematics since ancient Greece. With the continuous exploration and practice of modern science and technology in sports research, sports training, sports human science, sports rehabilitation and other sports disciplines have gradually formed, which has effectively promoted the development of scientific research in competitive sports and sports medicine.
In recent years, competitive sports are in the ascendant, and mass fitness is booming, both of which are empowered by the rapid development of information networks, intelligent wearable and other technologies. Sports-related knowledge and data continue to accumulate, which has further promoted the continuous integration of artificial intelligence technology focusing on data processing and knowledge learning with sports science, forming a new discipline of artificial intelligence in sports. The research objective of this discipline is to apply artificial intelligence technology in different research areas in the field of sports science to deeply understand the relationship between different sports modes and intensities of human body and sports performance, physiological function and human health, and create the equipment and systems with artificial intelligence.
Capital University of Physical Education and Sports (CUPES) took the opportunity of this discipline development, established the development strategy of innovative integration of “sport, medicine and engineering”, and established the Institute of Artificial Intelligence in Sports (IAIS) in August 2019. In the past few years, under the overall planning and unified organization of CUPES, the faculty construction, disciplinary development, talent training, scientific research of IAIS have achieved a leapfrog start, laying a solid foundation for high-quality development. In the future, IAIS will follow the ideals of “sport oriented, intelligence driven, sport & engineering integrated”, make full use of the knowledge accumulation, talent reserve and platform foundation in sports science of CUPES, focus on key scientific issues in competitive sports, public health, school sports and other fields, refine the forward-looking academic areas in the field, build an inclusive and innovative talent team, and create discipline leading scientific research platforms, explore the training mode of “dual excellence” in sport and engineering, and produce knowledge achievements serving the society, so as to build an world-class artificial intelligence research center in sports.
