In order to promote the mutual empowerment of sports and artificial intelligence, and promote the application of artificial intelligence technology in the field of sports, Capital University of Physical Education and Sports (CUPES) established the Institute of Artificial Intelligence in Sports (IAIS) in August 2019, aiming at the research field of sports engineering, clarifying the theoretical mechanism of sports promoting health, and developing the core technology of artificial intelligence in sports, build a world-class scientific research platform of artificial intelligence in sports, form a faculty team with moderate overall scale and excellent innovation ability, cultivate high-quality talents with distinctive characteristics and excellence in sport and engineering, and produce scientific research achievements that meet the national strategies and social needs.
Since its establishment, IAIS has developed rapidly in various disciplines, with a growing faculty and a continuous improvement in the overall management level. It has gradually formed the research areas of sports biomechanics, physical exercise and intelligent testing & analysis, sensor network in sports, sports medicine engineering, etc. At present, there are 31 faculty members, including 6 professors, 13 associate professors and 9 lecturers. Most research-oriented faculty have doctoral degree or post-doctoral research experience. The faculty of IAIS includes one affiliated professor of national overseas talent project experts, one person in charge of national key research and development projects, one “Chinese Scientist for Ice and Snow Sports”, and one affiliated professor of Beijing project experts. In addition, there are over 30 part-time teachers and visiting professors.
IAIS has actively carried out scientific research and achieved fruitful results. It has successively undertaken national key research and development projects, projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, military and civilian integration projects, commissioned projects by General Administration of Sport and Beijing Municipal Education Commission, and has been approved with a number of invention patents and other intellectual property achievements. It has been recognized by the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission as a training institution for advanced skills (in the direction of artificial intelligence). In addition, IAIS has established close cooperation with many universities, research institutes and high-tech enterprises at home and abroad, and maintained extensive academic exchanges. IAIS has actively carried out academic conferences on and off campus, hosted large-scale academic conferences at home and abroad, and participated in brand science and technology exhibitions with self-developed equipment.
In the future, IAIS will continue to adhere to the development strategy of innovative integration of “sport, medicine and engineering”, focus on national strategies such as “sports power” and “healthy China”, base itself on the “Four Centers” strategic positioning of Beijing, deeply integrate with the original disciplines such as sports science and psychology, focus on the “stranglehold” problems in three major fields such as competitive sports, public health and school sports, and build an international first-class high-end innovation platform and sports engineering research center integrating scientific and technological innovation, engineering application, achievements transformation, industrial upgrading, disciplinary construction, talent training and social services.
